Processing and application of nanostructured alloys and composites obtained by powder compaction

Abstract :

In addition to refining grains, severe plastic deformation (SPD) based processes such as equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and high pressure torsion (HPT) can be used to fabricate bulk materials from particles, and are especially suitable for producing complex multiphase alloys and nanocomposites. SPD consolidation relies on plastic deformation of individual particles, rather than diffusion, to achieve bonding. Using examples of consolidating Al particles by ECAP, the mechanism and conditions for achieving good consolidation are illustrated. Selected ultrafine and nanostructured alloys and composites consolidated using SPD are demonstrated
