TEM investigations of nano-scale metastable precipitates in Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) alloys

Abstract :

Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) alloys are an important group of materials widely used in industrial applications due to their lightweight, high strength and good corrosion properties. The strength arises from the formation in the Al matrix of high numbers of nano-scale metastable precipitates during a final ageing heat-treatment. The precipitation sequence is complex, as various types of metastable phases form with different sizes, number densities and volume fractions (nano-structure). This process is dependent of alloy composition and heat treatment. Therefore, optimization for the desired mechanical properties is possible only by extensive studies of the precipitation phenomenon. One of the best tools available today for this purpose is Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which enables nano-structure quantification and provides structural information from individual precipitates, down to atomic level.
