Title : High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) investigations of Carbon Nano-Tubes (CNT) and Carbon Nano-Fibers (CNF)

Abstract : CNT and CNF are newly-discovered carbon allotropes, consisting of different wrappings of graphite sheets. Due to their light-weight, high strength, high surface to volume ratio and good electronic properties, the CNT have the potential of being used as structural materials, in batteries, electric circuits, etc. However, one major obstacle to realization of CNT has been the lack of technology for mass production. Often in the production process the CNT are found together with other forms of carbon, making the separation necessary. A very useful tool in the characterisation of carbon material resulted from a CNT production reactor is Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Structural differences between CNT, graphite sheets, fullerenes and CNF will be discussed based on HRTEM images.
